The featherweight Asus X205TA is a proof that old ideas never die. The thin and cheap laptop comes with cloud storage and Microsoft Office.

 The Asus X205TA is a windows laptop that comes into the mix awakening the netbook craze as an alternative for Chromebooks. The 11.6 inch windows laptop sports a sleek design with an outstanding battery life for everyday computing.

It is powered by a quad-core Intel Atom Z3735 processor clocked at 1.33GHz coupled with 2GB of RAM and 32 GB of SSD internal storage. The system comes pre-installed with windows 8 which is upgradable to Windows 10 operating system which is easier and enjoyable to use.

It comes with one year Office 365 Personal subscription for 1TB of cloud storage on OneDrive. The Asus takes pride on its long battery life and a sharp TN panel display with a resolution of 1366×768 pixels.

The laptop is ideal for school, office or home use for editing of documents, emailing, browsing the internet or watching movies.


The Asus X205TA features a streamlined plastic with rounded edges that are soft with a smooth matte finish. The Asus measures 11.2×7.6×0.6 inches and weighs 2.16 pounds hence lighter and thinner than the completion.

It competes well with the HP stream which measures 12×8.1×0.7 inches and weighs 2.74 pounds. As such, the laptop slide easily into your backpack making it ideal for road warriors who want to work while on the move.


Under the hood, the Asus X205TA houses 1.33-GHz Intel Atom Z3735 quad-core CPU that can run up to 1.8GHz with Turbo Boost Technology. It combines with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of flash storage that is capable of handling the basic computing tasks with ease.

The laptop can comfortably stream 1080p YouTube videos without any problem and open multiple tabs for web browsing without slowing down. The inclusion of the 32GB State Solid Drive is appreciable as it offers quick boot times and loading of programs.

The featherweight laptop is no gaming monster but it can comfortably handle casual gaming without stuttering. It comes packed with integrated Intel HD graphics that can handle casual titles such as plants vs zombies. Playing of graphic heavy games could lead to the laptop stuttering. For instance, it can play the Heroes of Warcraft smoothly but switching to online gaming makes the machine to lag and slow down.


Asus keeps the connectivity ports to a minimum. The laptop includes two USB 2.0 ports for connecting your mouse, or an external hard disk to transfer data. There is a MicroSD reader and a micro HDMI port to extend your display to larger screens such as monitors or HDTVs.

A combo headphone/mic jack is in place for external connections to listen to your music or watch videos with little disturbance while travelling, at home or at school. The laptop does not come with an in-built optical drive, as a way of making it slimmer and portable. You will have to purchase an external optical drive separately in case you need it.

For internet connectivity, you get to utilize Wi-Fi 802.11 a/g/n wireless internet.


The 11.6 inch LED display laptop comes with a resolution of 1366×768 pixels and an aspect ratio of 16:9. This is a major win for the Asus laptop compared most of the laptops in this category. The Asus comes with a TN panel that is better than the one seen on the HP Stream 11 as it is sharper. The Asus produces 217 nits of brightness and a color Gamut that is 68 per cent better than its competitors. The color accuracy of the laptop is however not at its best compared to the HP Stream 11.

The Asus X205TA comes with a chiclet style keyboard with a slightly cramped layout. It has a key travel of 1.34mm that could sometimes make it difficult to maintain a high typing speed. The touchpad is in good size at 4.1×2.45 inches and it is smooth and precise when using it.

The laptop has two built in stereo speakers at the bottom of the chassis that are fairly loud enough to fill a small room with sound. We could have asked for some more bass but then this a common flaw on laptops in this category. Asus never skimps when it comes to the battery life. This is the same case with their Asus X205TA, the battery can run up to 7 hours with mixed usage.


The Asus X205TA is an entry level laptop with an elegant design that offers a decent performance at a pocket friendly price. The laptop comes with a solid display, a great battery life all packed in a slim premium body. It has a good-sized touchpad but comes with a cramped keyboard, solely because of its small size.

It combines a quad-core Intel Atom Z3735 processor clocked at 1.33GHz alongside with 2GB of RAM and 32 GB to offer a smooth performance in handling everyday tasks. If you are after a portable and small sized laptop capable of handling basic tasks such as editing of documents, emailing, web browsing and watching movies then the Asus X205TA  is worth to top your shopping list.
