CONS: Entry level NVIDIA graphics. No optical drive. Mechanical Hard drive

Asus seems to make a statement that it has not run short of ideas when it comes to the manufacture of notebooks aimed at taking care of different user’s preferences. The Asus R516UX is yet another release from Asus that sports the 6th generation Intel Core i7-6500U processor, 8GB of DDR3L RAM and a massive 1TB hard drive. The brighter side of this laptop is that it offers users room for future expansion.

Users have the freedom of upgrading the onboard system memory or replacing the HDD to meet their needs or specifications.

The Asus boasts of a 15.6 inch screen with a resolution of 1920×1080 coupled with a dedicated NVIDIA GeForce GTX950M graphics card with 2GB of GDDR3 VRAM.

The connectivity department is also well staffed for the connection of your devices and other peripherals. The laptop packs decent features that professionals will find useful in handling of very demanding to casual tasks without the fear of stuttering.

The Asus positions itself as powerful laptop capable of handling day to day tasks such as web browsing, editing of documents, listening to music, watching videos, gaming and run software such as Photoshop in editing of photos and images.

The Asus R516UX sports a matte finish on its top lid cover that makes it to have a premium look. The laptop measures 15 x 10 x 0.9 inches and weigh 4.4 pounds thereby making it a portable device to carry around to school or to the office for handling your tasks and back to the house for entertainment.

Under the hood, the Asus houses the 6th generation Intel Core i7-6500U processor clocked at 2.5GHz that is capable to run up to 3.1GHz with turbo boost technology. The system offers 8GB of DDR3L RAM which is expandable to 16GB for fast and smooth performance.

Most users will find the memory to be sufficient enough in handling day to day tasks. There is 1TB SATA hard drive for storing tons of multimedia work and it combines with the other features to offer a decent performance in handling power-hungry applications.

Most geeks will find the 5400RPM spindle speed of the mechanical hard drive slow at this time and age. As such, you can simply replace the HDD with a fast SSD that will give you fast boot times and loading speeds.

Gaming enthusiasts will find something to smile about with the Asus as it packs a dedicated NVIDIA GeForce GTX950M graphics card with 2GB of GDDR3 VRAM. As such, the GPU allows you to game with detail graphics at smooth frame rates.

The system is capable of handling a number of games including GTA 5 where you 35fps at high settings and 1080 pixels. This is set to improve if you use medium settings and 720p then you can expect around 40fps on fallout4. Titles such as League of legends and Counterstrike is a walk in the park for this system. The dedicated memory performs slightly less than the most advanced integrated Intel Iris Pro 6200 and about 15% less than GTX 960M.

In terms of connectivity, the system features two USB 2.0 ports and two 3.0 ports for the connection of printers, external storage drives and other USB devices. There is a combo audio jack for the connection of audio devices and Bluetooth 4.0 for wireless connection to Bluetooth enabled headsets and speakers. It also comes with a media reader that supports SD, SDHC and SDXC cards.

There is an HDMI port for extending your display to high definition screens such as HDTVs and monitor to watch your movies or make a presentation. The laptop does not come with an optical drive, perhaps in the spirit of keeping the device as light as possible. You will have to purchase an external optical drive to read your and write your CDs and DVDs.

There is a Gigabit Ethernet RJ-45 for cabled internet connection and wireless connection is available using WI-FI 802.11ac which offers fast speeds in accessing the internet.

The 15.6 inch full HD display non-touchscreen laptop comes with a resolution of 1920×1080p and an LCD panel. The inclusion of Asus Splendid technology allows the screen to reproduce deeper colors and bright images thereby offering an enjoyable watching experience. There is a webcam embedded in the top screen bezel that is ideal for video conference and chatting with family and friends using programs such as Skype as it comes with a built-in microphone. The high definition VGS camera is also good for taking photos.

Other Features

The laptop comes with a full size chiclet style backlit keyboard that is comfortable for typing and gaming even in dim lit areas. The touchpad is large enough compared to other laptops in the same category and is capable of zooming images and webpages in and out by pinching the touchpad thanks to the Asus Smart gesture technology. The Asus comes with built-in speakers that deliver a pretty good sound quality thanks to the Asus Sonic Master.

The Asus comes with a 3-cell 48Whrs battery unit that promises to give you 5 hours of usage before reaching out to the socket. Given its capacity, you should expect around 4 hours of usage for things like video streaming and surfing the internet.

The Asus R516UX is value-packed with all the essentials for handling your daily computing. The laptop has more hits than it misses. The most disappointing feature is the storage speed of 5400rpm and the lack of a solid state drive. However, if speed is not your priority, the 1TB hard drive offers ample space for storage of all your photos, videos, music and movies.

For those after speed, the good news is that you can replace the HDD with an SSD. Serious gamers will not find this laptop satisfactory with its middle of the road Nvidia GTX 950M with 2GB VGRAM graphics card. It is advisable to look upwards and consider the dell Inspiron or Asus K501UX for an enjoyable gaming experience at an affordable price.

The Asus R516UX fits into the bill of a user after a laptop to perform heavy and demanding non-gaming stuff including multimedia and daily basic tasks such as internet browsing, emailing and editing of office documents.
