Asus Transformer Mini T102HA-D4-GR 10.1 inch Laptop Review

345Not long ago the 10.1-inch mini laptops were almost losing their glory to the rise of tablets, which have since taken more ground in the market of ultra-portables. Asus strives to change this with the release of the Asus Transformer Mini T102HA-D4-GR. This a 10.1 inch Touchscreen 2-in-1 laptop running on windows 10 with support for active pens. The laptop follows the footsteps of the ASUS Transformer Book Chi 12.5-Inch T300CHI-F1-DB and the ASUS Transformer Book T100HA-C4-GR 10.1 inch touchscreen released earlier. The laptop is powered by the latest Intel Cherry trail Quad-core x5z8350 Processor coupled with 4GB RAM and 128GB SSD for Fast and efficient performance.  If you are a casual user after a portable, compact size and budget mini-laptop, then you may want to read more about this laptop.

Design

The Transformer Mini features a Magnesium alloy body which brings about its light form factor. There are a range of colors available for the including device Quartz Gray tablet and keyboard, and a Pearl White tablet with an Amber, Mint Green, or Icicle Gold keyboard. Carrying the mini-laptop around won’t break any sweat as its diminutive size makes it much portable. The laptop measures 6.7 x 10.2 x 0.5 inches and weighs at 1.7 pounds just like its predecessor the Asus Transformer Book T100HA-C4-GR.The laptop comes with a fully adjustable kickstand on the back just like the Asus Transformer Pro3 and the Microsoft surface Pro 3. The a smart hinge design allows the kickstand to up to 170 degrees of movement. As such, you can comfortably use the laptop on tablet mode while it rests on your lap or desk on its own.

The laptop allows you to get the best of both worlds with the included pen stylus and keyboard dock. The detachable keyboard comes with a 1.5mm key travel that are quite springy, so don’t expect fast typing on this tiny laptop. The touchpad is mid-sized but those with bigger hands might find this uncomfortable. It has a smooth surface that functions well but the buttons are occasionally stiff and clunky. There is a pen holder on the right side of the keyboard for the Asus digitizer. You can use the stylus pen with programs such as OneNote, Fresh paint, sketchpad, sticky notes and screen sketch to get a taste of your own handwriting on the screen.

Performance

Under the hood, the Asus Transformer Mini T102HA-D4-GR houses the latest Intel Cherry trail Quad Core x5z8350 Processor. It clocks at 1.44 GHz but can run up to 1.94GHz which is barely enough to offer a decent performance. The processor combines with 4GB of RAM thus capable of handling everyday tasks such as web browsing, emailing and editing of documents. In terms of storage, the Asus comes with a 128 GB Solid State Drive. This sounds great, but don’t celebrate yet because this is a 128 GB embedded Multimedia Card that is not that fast or durable.

The Asus Transformer Mini T102HA-D4-GR is not a gaming machine in any way. It comes with Intel HD integrated graphics that is extremely slow even among the integrated units. As such, gamers should not expect the laptop to handle titles such as Battlefield 4 and GTA 5. It can only handle simple games on low settings such as World of Warcraft.

Connectivity

There is a compromise when it comes to Connectivity on this mini-laptop due to its slim profile. The Transformer Book comes with one USB 3.0 port to connect other devices and a MicroUSB for charging purposes. Luckily, there is a Micro HDMI port for extending your display to a larger screen to watch your movies in Full HD. There is also a MicroSD card slot for transferring photos and files from your camera and a 3.5 mm audio combo jack. Internet connectivity is possible by way of Wi-Fi 802.11ac and Bluetooth 4.1.rrrr

Display

The 10.1 inch touchscreen display Asus Transformer Mini T102HA-D4-GR comes with a 16:10 aspects and an IPS panel with a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels. It has a brightness of 400 nits with an excellent contrast and color accuracy that is above the average. The IPS technology offers wide viewing angles of up to 178 degrees with bright and clear images. The Asus comes with a 2.0 MP front camera above the display which comes in handy for video conferencing and chatting with friends and family via Skype. The camera does not give the best quality when taking photos and videos, but then that’s all we can get at such a low price.1

Other Features

There is a fingerprint sensor on the back side of the Asus that scans automatically upon touch of it. As such, it will help you boost the security of your device by making it almost impossible for any other person to have a look at your laptop without your permission. It also the fastest way to unlock your device. The tablet comes with two separate speakers placed on each lateral side. The stereo speakers are 1.5 watt speakers that are moderately loud thanks to the Asus SonicMaster Technology.

The system comes with a 30Wh battery that fits well in this mini-laptop albeit appearing to be small. Asus promises that you can get to squeeze up to 11 hours of video playback with the battery when fully charged. We expect less hours when it comes to continuous browsing and handling of other tasks. All in all, the point is that the battery is decent enough to sustain you a couple of hours before plugging it in.

Conclusion

The Asus Transformer Mini T102HA-D4-GR comes with a design meant for handling simple tasks and little to no multitasking. The Asus will handle well you text editing in Google drive or Office, emailing, streaming YouTube and browsing. The laptop will work seamlessly with few tabs open but opening multiple programs will definitely bring it to a stutter. You could consider going for the HP Spectre x2 or the Lenovo Miix 510 with a few more bucks that come with a faster hardware.  But if you should keep your expectations in check the moment you settle for this laptop. If you are in a budget and understand all you need is a portable, slim mini laptop for casual use, then the Asus Transformer Mini T102HA-D4-GR will serve you right.
