2016 Newest HP 15.6-ay191ms Touchscreen Laptop Review

The HP Notebook 15-ay191ms enters into the competition with mid-range technical specs and features. The 15.6 inch laptop is the latest 2017 flagship signature edition laptop that aims to take care of entry-level laptop users by providing a smooth performance for handling every tasks. The system is powered by a 7th generation Intel core i3-7100U processor and 8 GB DDR4 RAM and a massive 1 TB hard drive. The 15.6-inch display supports 720p contents and touch-screen capability along with Intel HD Graphics 620 for improved multimedia capabilities and visuals quality. The laptop comes into the market to improve on its predecessor the HP 15-ay019ms touch screen laptop which features 6th generation Intel core i3-6100U processor, 8GB RAM and I TB hard drive. The HP Notebook 15-ay191ms can handle casual gaming and other day to day tasks such as editing documents, spreadsheets, emailing, making a presentation, browsing the internet, watching videos and movies.

Design

The HP 15-ay191ms is made of all plastic but boasts of a sleek and sturdy design. The laptop measures 15 x 10 x 0.9 inches and weighs at 4.6 pounds which is lighter and thinner than the Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575-33BM that measures 10.2 x 15.02 x 1.19 inches and weighs 5.3 pounds. The laptop packs a 31WHr 3-cell lithium-ion battery that offers a decent battery life for everyday use. However, being a budget desktop, the battery life won’t last you more than 5 hours so you have to keep your charging adapter close. The keyboard also does not come with backlighting but the keys feel nice to type on and includes a 10-key number pad a not so great trackpad with left and right buttons.

Performance

Under the hood, the HP Notebook 15-ay191ms houses the 7th generation Intel core i3-7100U processor clocked at a fixed 2.4 GHz speed without turbo boost. The processor is more powerful as it is evident with the CPU mark score where the unit scores 3800 points, this is almost the same score seen on the 6th generation core i5-6200U. However, the laptop is not good in handling power demanding tasks such as Revit and 3Ds MAX. The system includes 8GB of DDR4 RAM that is expandable to 16 GB and a massive 1 TB 5400RPM hard drive with windows 10 home 64 bit operating system preinstalled. The Hard drive is great in terms of storage but lacks the speed of a solid state drive. Solid state Drives are faster than hard drives and are preferable for photo and video editing and 3D designing. It also makes booting process faster and reduces file upload time.

The gamers won’t find the laptop inspiring, this is because the system comes with an integrated Intel HD 620 graphics unit which is not good for serious gaming. The laptop can however handle some casual gaming on low to medium settings. Titles such as GTA gets 30 FPS when you use low presets and a 720p resolution. The Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575G-53VG is a better option for gaming in this category as it comes with NVIDIA Geforce 940MX discrete graphics with 2GB GDDR5 video memory capable of handling the latest titles.

Connectivity

The connectivity department has nothing special to offer. It features the standard ports including two USB 2.0 ports and a single USB 3.0 port for connecting other peripherals. There is an HDMI output port for extending the display, a Multi-format SD card reader, Headphone output/Microphone input combo and Kensington Lock. The laptop also comes with a SuperMulti DVD optical drive for use with your DVDs. Internet connectivity is available by way of 0/100Mbps Ethernet LAN and Wireless 802.11 b/g/n. The laptop doesn’t support wireless ac, however, Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575G-53VG offers Gigabit Ethernet, Wireless ac and Bluetooth.

Display

The 15.6 inch WLED-backlit high definition touch display supports 10-finger multi-touch and has a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels- vibrant screen with good contrast and colors. The laptop lacks full HD support thus disadvantaging it with other laptops on the competition. The inclusion of a touch screen on this device is rather misplaced considering that it runs on windows 10. The effort could have been utilized in bumping up the resolution of the display as witnessed in the Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575G-53VG which comes with a Full HD (1920x1080p) without the touchscreen feature.  The laptop includes a 720p webcam that is good for video chats with friends and family via skype and capturing photos.

Other Features

The system comes with dual stereo speakers that create a powerful audio output. The inclusion of DTS Studio Sound helps in offering decent quality, loud and clear sound with nice deep bass that is ideal for watching movies or playing videos or songs.

Conclusion

The HP Notebook 15-ay191ms signature edition Laptop suffices as a decent laptop for basic computing as well as casual gaming. The laptop combines a 7th generation Intel core i3-7100U processor, 8GB RAM and a massive 1 TB 5400RPM hard drive for smooth multitasking and multimedia capabilities. The device is compact and easy to carry around weighing at 4.6 pounds and offers standard connectivity options. The inclusion of a Full-size island-style keyboard with 10-keypad is a welcome feature that makes the typing experience comfortable and enjoyable. The laptop does not claim to be a high-end machine, but offers very modern specs, mid-range specs, a responsive touchscreen and a reasonable display resolution at a budget price. As such, the HP Notebook 15-ay191ms is a capable signature edition laptop for entry level day to day tasks that offers value for the money on those on a budget.
